The
“Hildegard von Bingen” female choir, founded by Tiziana Fumagalli, the
choirmaster, was established in 1992. Based in Como, it is formed by
singers with a full-fledged choral experience. Its object is to study and
spread, in addition to the traditional polyphonic repertoire, musical
works dedicated to female figures, mainly music written by female
composers. To this end, the choir cooperates steadily with the Como-based
“Donneinmusica” group in the research, transcription, and performance of
even unknown works composed by women.
The choir takes its
inspiration from the figure of Hildegard von Bingen, to whom it dedicates
a particular and in-depth study. Reflections on the composer’s figure and
work have led from the very beginning to the group’s expressive and
musical approach, which involves also monographic programmes and
concert-lessons.
Performances are meant to recreate the
spiritual atmosphere and the fascinating charm of convent singing.

The
choir can boast its participation in a number of meetings and festivals and
its cooperation with renowned organizations such as “Università degli
Studi”, Verona, the “Margaret Fuller” women’s cultural centre, Pescara, “Il
Canto delle Pietre” and the “Autunno Musicale” International Festival, Como.
Within the frame
of the Como Festival, the choir took part in the one-act opera
“Savitri”, by Gustav Holst, with the Autunno Musicale Chamber Orchestra
conducted by Pierangelo Gelmini, and also sang the “Choral Hymns from the
Rig Veda”, for choir and harp, written by the same author.
During the year 2007 the choir opened the
international meeting "The monastery, a place of prayer and
culture", into the project "Monastic orders defenders of the
european culture".
The choir took part in the performance
"Fanny Mendelsshon, the time of life" playing pieces of her music.
The choir recorded two CDs
containing music by Hildegard von Bingen: one in 1996, attached to the first
unabridged translation of the poetic work of the saint (“Carmina” by
Hildegard von Bingen, translated into Italian by Prof. Vincenzo Guarracino,
published by Demetra - coll. Acquarelli), and the other in 1998 for
Recording Art.
